Atlético’s top three status in acid test with Tenerife eyeing maximum points against Eibar: Primera Iberdrola Week 27 Preview

Third-placed Atlético Madrid face Athletic Club at the Estadio Wanda Atlético de Madrid Alcalá de Henares on Sunday.

The Madrid side are under pressure from fourth-placed UDG Tenerife with whom they are tied on 50 points. A slip up will put their dreams of a top three finish under threat with Athletic Club looking to mount a challenge in the quest for a top eight finish.

The two teams have met 24 times with Atlético Madrid winning nine, losing eight and drawing seven. The head-to-head statistics show that it will be a close contest with both sides eyeing maximum points and bragging rights.

Elsewhere, Real Madrid fancy their chances of a late fight for a top three finish when they make a trip to Ciudad Deportiva José Luis Compañón to face Alavés on Sunday.

The visitors will be banking on their in-form forward, Esther Gonzalez, for goals and defender Ivana to make sure they keep Alavés attackers at bay.

With Real Madrid just three points from third position with a game in hand, they will need maximum points to keep pace with other top three contenders whilst Alavés will want to push to get into the top eight in their first season.

The teams have met once and the match was a one-all draw at the Estadio Alfredo di Stefano in November last year.

UDG Tenerife will be looking to break their inconsistent run when they host struggling Eibar at the Estadio La Palmera on Saturday.

The fourth-placed side is tied on 50 points with third-placed Atlético Madrid who play on Sunday. A win for Tenerife will momentarily take them to third position.

Eibar, on the other hand, still have a chance to survive the chop if they manage to collect maximum points in their remaining matches.

The teams have met three times with UDG Tenerife winning twice and losing once.

Second-placed Real Sociedad will be hoping for a win when they visit Ramón Cisneros Palacios to face Sevilla on Saturday.

Sociedad just need seven out of the remaining 12 points to be guaranteed the second position.

If they can secure the seven points, this will be Sociedad’s best season in the division, yet they are facing a Sevilla side that is eyeing a top eight finish and cannot afford to drop points.

The teams have met 15 times with Real Sociedad winning eight, losing four and drawing three.

Valencia face their greatest test in their fight for survival when they host champions Barcelona at the Estadio Antonio Puchades on Saturday.

Valencia are only five points above relegation with four matches to go. The hosts would at this time have loved a different opponent from Barcelona who have marauding forwards that include the fun-scoring woman of the moment Claudia Pina alongside midfielder Alexia Putellas who is regarded as the current best female player.

Barcelona are yet to drop points this season and are fancying a 100% campaign.

The teams have met 22 times with Barcelona winning 19 times, losing two and drawing one, a statistic which gives the visitors the highest chance of winning this fixture.

Rayo Vallecano at the base of the log standings will be hosting Levante at the Ciudad Deportiva Rayo Vallecano Campo 5 on Sunday.

Levante will be looking forward to making it three wins in a row in order to keep fighting to finish in a respectable position after a dismal campaign which was affected by their participation in the Champions League beginning of the season. Rayo, on the other hand, have a mammoth task of having to survive the chop by winning all their remaining matches while hoping that the teams above them lose theirs.

The teams have met 21 times with Levante winning 11, losing five and drawing five.

Villarreal host Sporting Huelva at the Ciudad Deportiva on Sunday in a battle for relegation survival.

The teams, which are tied on 24 points, will play in the thriller where there is all to play for as both teams are five points above relegation.

Huelva have a record 12 draws this season and would not want more whilst Villarreal have conceded more goals than any other team in the division this season and would need to be at their best not to leak any more goals.

The teams have met once, a match which played out to a nil-all draw in September last year.

Madrid CFF will host Real Betis at the Estadio Municipal Nuevo Matapiñonera on Sunday in their bid to avoid the chop.

The hosts, who need six points from their remaining matches to survive the chop, will be banking on the division’s top scorer Geyse Ferreira for goals.

Betis, on the other hand, will be hoping to end the winless run of their last five matches. A win will secure them a place in the division next season.

The teams have met nine times before with Madrid CFF winning three times, losing five times and drawing once.
