Early Bundesliga climax as Bayern seek to swing title race at Wolfsburg: Frauen-Bundesliga Week 5 Preview
Defending champions Wolfsburg recorded back to back wins over the Bavarians in the league last term with an embarrassing 6-0 rout being the 2nd leg result
Former champions Bayern Munich will be looking to swing the title race in a backbreaking tie against defending champions Wolfsburg away on Sunday afternoon.
Wolfsburg will be drawing momentum from their 2-0 win over Potsdam last weekend and a 4-0 thumping of SKN St. Pölten in the UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) on Thursday as they clash with the Munich side who will be drawing confidence from their 4-0 demolition of FC Köln last weekend and a 2-1 edging of FC Rosengård in the UWCL on Wednesday.
Die Wölfinnen will turn to the illustrious services of forward Ewa Pajor who has found the net four times in four matches whilst the Bavarians will pin their hopes on forward Linda Dallmann who has also been on the scoresheets four times in four matches. Pajor and Dallmann are also joint-top scorers in the current Frauen-Bundesliga campaign.
Wolfsburg have a 100% record and sit at the crest of the Frauen-Bundesliga standings on 12 points from four wins in as many matches whilst Bayern Munich are second on 10 points from three wins and a draw in the same number of matches.
Elsewhere, Frankfurt will be looking for a fourth straight win when they entertain Frauen-Bundesliga initiates Duisburg on Sunday.
The hosts emphatically won 4-0 over SGS Essen last weekend and will be looking repeat the feat when they play the visitors who have managed just one win this term.
Slovenian striker Lara Prašnikar and German forward Shekiera Martinez who have three goals apiece and are club joint-top scorers will be called upon to steer the ship to success as Frankfurt look to keep pressure on the teams above them.
Should Frankfurt win and Wolfsburg and Bayern draw in their match elsewhere, Niko Arnautis’ side will go on level points with the two top teams.
Duisburg will be without midfielder Sarah Freutel who received two yellow cards during their 0-0 draw against Werder Bremen last weekend.
Frankfurt are third on the standings on 10 points from three wins and a draw in four outings whilst Duisburg are eighth on four points from one win and one draw in the same number of encounters.
Freiburg will be looking to bounce back from a 3-2 defeat away to Hoffenheim last weekend when they host Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.
The hosts have had an indifferent campaign so far with two wins and two defeats and will be looking to quickly get a grip on their season to try to be in the champions league spots come end of term.
Bayer, on the other hand, are also looking to bounce back from a disappointing 1-0 defeat to newcomers Meppen in order to quickly cement their place as serious contestants in this campaign.
Bayer will pin their hopes on Dutch forward Jill Baijings who is club top scorer and joint-third top scorer in the current Frauen-Bundesliga campaign with three goals.
The hosts are fourth on the standings on six points from two wins in four games whilst the visitors are on six points from two wins in the same number of encounters and are in seventh place on goal difference.
Hoffenheim will be relishing the prospects of going third on the standings with a win away to Essen on Sunday afternoon.
Hoffenheim have also had an indifferent season so far comprising of two wins and two draws and will be looking to avoid last season’s scenario of missing champions league by just two places.
Essen will be without full back Jacqueline Meißner who received a straight red card in their 4-0 to Frankfurt last weekend.

Beleaguered Potsdam will be looking for an evasive first win of the campaign when they travel to Meppen on Friday evening.
Potsdam, who finished last term on fourth place, are at the bottom of the log on one point from one draw in four matches whilst Meppen are ninth on three points from one win in the same number of contests.
Werder Bremen will be looking to end a four-game winless streak when they host FC Köln on Sunday.
Werder Bremen are 11th on the standings on two points from two draws in four contests whilst FC Köln, who have had a lukewarm season so far, are sixth on six points from two wins in the same number of games.
