Primera Iberdrola roundup: Barcelona and Sevilla win as Real Madrid continue struggling
Primera Iberdrola got up and running in week 7 of the 2021/22 season as Barcelona continued with their good run before the international break when they saw off Sporting Huelva with a 5-0 victory away from home to consolidate their position at the top of the standings. Aitana Bonmati was the star of the show after grabbing a brace with other goals coming in from skipper Alexia Putellas, Irene Paredes and an own goal from Mayra Ramírez in the 28th minute.
Real Madrid’s woes continue
Real Madrid continued to struggle as they suffered a 3-0 loss to Sevilla on Saturday as they found themselves winning just once in the last five games. They seem to be doing well in the UEFA Women’s Champions League after winning 5-0 against Breidablik on Wednesday but they are failing to translate that form to their domestic league. Sevilla got their goals from María Inmaculada Gabarro who broke the deadlock in the 9th minute before getting her brace in the 52nd minute and a late penalty from Jessica Martínez in the 81st minute.
The other match on Saturday saw Valencia registering a 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano with a 44th minute Iina Salmi strike settling the contest. This was Valencia’s only win in the last five matches after going for a four match losing streak.
Levante hand Real Sociedad their first defeat
Real Sociedad suffered their first defeat of the campaign after Levante’s Carolina Férez struck a late winner in the 89th minute. Sociedad suffered a major setback in the 38th minute after Manuela Vanegas received a red card when she was shown her second yellow card. If Sociedad had avoided defeat they would have been on the same points with Barcelona but with inferior goal difference. With that victory over Sociedad, Levante moved into fourth place with 14 points after 7 matches.
Elsewhere, Atlético Madrid have now gone 3 games without a win after they drew 1-1 with Granadilla Tenerife yesterday. They opened the scoring in the 4th minute after Ludmila gave them the lead but Tenerife fought back and equalised in the 14th minute through a María José Pérez González strike.
Real Betis registered their second victory in the last five games after beating Eibar yesterday. They had to fight back after they conceded first when Eibar took the lead through a Carla Morena Rincon strike in the 7th minute. Betis scored either half to clinch a 2-1 away victory after they equalised through a Grace Asantewaa strike in the 12th minute and a second half winner from Angela Sosa in the 52nd minute.
Alavés moved to sixth place after handing Madrid CFF their first defeat in the last five games after a late Carla Armengol Joaniquet strike in the 86th minute. Carla struck the winner only a minute after replacing Sara Carrillo in the 85th minute.
Athletic Club moved to third place with a 2-1 home win against visiting Villarreal. Their two goals before the half hour mark through Ainize Barea and Erika Vázquez were enough to give them the 3 points although Villarreal fought back after getting an early second half goal through Sara Medina Hidalgo in the 48th minute. This was Athletic Club’s fourth win in their last five games.
