Wolfsburg, Bayern, Potsdam in big wins as SC Sand record first victory: Frauen-Bundesliga Week 15 Round Up
Championship hopefuls Wolfsburg recorded their third win on the bounce with a 4-1 home win over Freiburg on Sunday to keep pressure on defending champions Bayern Munich.
The hosts took the lead from a penalty in the 15thminute which was converted by Dutch defender Dominique Janssen and the match would go to the break at 1-0. Half-time substitute forward Pauline Bremer made it 2-0 two minutes into the second half before Swedish forward Rebecka Blomqvist tripled the lead three minutes later.
Forward Tabea Waßmuth put the contest beyond the visitors when she made it 4-0 in the 59th minute.
Forward Hasret Kayikçi pulled one back for Freiburg to make it 4-1 11 minutes from time. The goal would be her eighth of the campaign, yet it would only be consolation.
The win took second-placed Wolfsburg to 35 points with a game in hand whilst Freiburg remain on seventh with 17 points.
Elsewhere, defending champions Bayern Munich made it four wins on the bounce with a 6-0 demolition of FC Köln at home on Sunday.
Germany international Lea Schüller, who was a half-time substitute, made it 1-0 for the hosts with a strike two minutes into the second half before French international Viviane Asseyi, who was also a half-time substitute, made it 2-0 two minutes later. Swedish defender Hanna Glas tripled the lead on 66 minutes before Schüller quadrupled the lead with her second of the day on 68 minutes.
The 24-year-old made it 5-0 in the 76th minute, completing her hattrick, before Japanese international Saki Kumagai took the day’s tally to half-a-dozen in second half extra-time.
The Bavarians are now on 37 points after their 12thwin of the season and sit at the apex of the log whilst FC Köln remain eighth with 16 points.
Goals from Barbara Dunst, Lara Prašnikar and Anna Aehling were enough for Frankfurt to see off Hoffenheim 3-2 at home on Saturday.
Hoffenheim opened the scoring via an own goal from Brazilian defender Letícia Santos in the ninth minute and the match would go to the break at 1-0.
Dunst equalised for Frankfurt with a strike in the 57thminute before Prašnikar made it 2-1 in the 68th minute.
Midfielder Chantal Hagel made it 2-2 for Hoffenheim six minutes from time before Aehling restored the lead to make it 3-2 for Frankfurt four minutes from time.
Both teams are on 31 points with Hoffenheim on third place and Frankfurt on fourth due to goal difference.
Potsdam maintained pressure on the top teams with a 5-0 drubbing of SGS Essen away on Sunday.
Forward Klara Melissa Kössler opened the scoring for the visitors with a strike six minutes into the first half before defender Merle Barth missed an opportunity to double the lead when she missed a penalty six minutes later.
Kössler returned with a strike on 17 minutes, completing her brace before Barth finally found the back of the net two minutes later to make it 3-0. Forward Selina Cerci made it 4-0 with a strike on 28 minutes before the 21-year-old came back to make it 5-0 with another strike eight minutes into the second half. Cerci has been leading the Bundesliga goal charts for several weeks and the latest brace took her tally to 13.
Potsdam missed a chance to take the score line to half-a-dozen when Kössler missed a penalty in the 75th minute, which was their second penalty miss of the day.
The win was Potsdam’s third in a row and took them to 30 points whilst Essen remain too close to relegation spots with 12 points.
Bayer Leverkusen were held to a one-all draw by Werder Bremen on Friday.
Defender Michelle Ulbrich opened the scoring from the penalty spot for Werder Bremen on 13 minutes and the hosts would go to half-time trailing.
Midfielder Verena Wieder equalised for Bayer also from the penalty spot on 55 minutes and the teams would share the spoils.
The draw took Bayer to 21 points although they remain sixth whilst Werder Bremen are now on 12 points although they remain 10th.
SC Sand recorded their first win of the season when they trashed Carl Zeiss Jena 4-1 in a relegation survival clash on Saturday.
US midfielder Patricia del Carmen George opened the scoring for SC Sand in the 15th minute before midfielder Noemi Gentile doubled the lead in the 23rd minute.
Midfielder-cum-forward Verena Volkmer pulled one back for the hosts to make it 2-1 on 55 minutes before forward Dörthe Hoppius increased the lead to 3-1 with a strike on 86 minutes. Midfielder Chiara Loos put the match to bed when she made it 4-1 with a strike in the 87th minute.
The win moved SC Sand one place up the ladder from 12thto 11th place with five points whilst Carl Zeiss Jena, also with five points, slipped from 11th to 12th due to head-to-head record.
