Wolfsburg in tricky Potsdam test as Bayern, Frankfurt seek top spot: Frauen-Bundesliga Week 4 Preview

Reigning champions Wolfsburg will be looking to stretch their winning streak to four matches when they play guests to Potsdam at the Karl-Liebknecht-Stadion on Saturday afternoon.

Effervescent following their 6-1 demolition of Bayer Leverkusen which emphatically ruined the latter’s 100% record this season, Wolfsburg are still looking to impose themselves as early favourites in the title race whilst Potsdam are still looking for an elusive first win of the term.

Polish forward Ewa Pajor, who is club top scorer and joint-top scorer in the current Frauen-Bundesliga term, will be hoping to be among the goals for Die Wölfinnen having also found the back of the net in their 6-1 destruction of Bayer before the break. The visitors will also bank on Icelandic forward Sveindís Jane Jónsdóttir who has also come good scoring a brace in the same match and together with midfielder Jill Roord are club joint-second top scorers with two goals apiece.

Potsdam will be without first choice goalkeeper Vanessa Fischer after she was shown a straight red card in their 4-2 defeat to FC Köln before the break.

Tommy Stroot’s side are at the summit of the standings on nine points from three wins in as many matches whilst Potsdam are 10th on a single point from one draw in the same number of matches.

Elsewhere, former champions Bayern Munich will be looking to make it three wins in a row when they host FC Köln at the FC Bayern Campus Platz 1 on Sunday afternoon in their quest to reclaim lost glory.

The Bavarians have the momentum of two consecutive wins and will be looking to go past Köln who have a win on either side of a 1-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen three weeks ago.

The Munich side will be hoping that current joint-top scorer in the Frauen-Bundesliga, Linda Dallmann, who has three goals will put on her scoring boots and help secure a third full set of points. Köln, on the other hand, will pin their hopes on forward Mandy Islacker who is also joint-top scorer in the current campaign with three goals.

Bayern are second on the standings on seven points from two wins and a draw in three encounters whilst Köln are fourth on six points from two wins in the same numbers of outings.

Essen will be looking to return among the wins when they host Frankfurt on Sunday having lost 5-2 to Freiburg before the break.

Frankfurt will be looking to build on their 3-1 win over Werder Bremen a fortnight ago with a win that could take them to the top of the table should the two teams above them lose elsewhere.

The visitors will be hoping that Slovenian striker Lara Prasnikar, who is joint-top scorer in the current Frauen-Bundesliga campaign with three goals, will be on top of her game to help them secure another full set of points.

The hosts are ninth on the standings on three points from one win in three matches whilst the visitors, who are third due to inferior goal difference, have registered seven points from two wins and a draw in the same number of games.

Hoffenheim will be looking for their second full set of points when they host Freiburg on Friday evening.

Hoffenheim recorded their first win before the break when they beat newcomers Meppen 2-0 and will turn to that result for morale whilst Freiburg have the momentum of two wins in the new season and will be relishing the prospects of going on level points with Wolfsburg with a win away in Sinsheim.

Freiburg will be banking on the exploits of midfielder Janina Minge who is joint-top scorer in the current Frauen-Bundesliga campaign with three goals. Minge scored a hat-trick in their 5-2 win over Essen before the break.

The visitors are fifth on the standings on six points from two wins in three matches whilst the hosts are two places below on three points from one win in the same number of matches.

Sixth place Bayer Leverkusen will be looking to bounce back from a humiliating 6-1 defeat away to Wolfsburg a fortnight ago when they host bottom place Meppen at the Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion on Sunday.

Being the sufferers of the heaviest defeat of the season so far and seeing their 100% start to the season ruined embarrassingly, Bayer will be looking to mete out vengeance on Meppen who have lost all their opening three matches this season.

Bayer will unleash in-form Dutch forward Jill Baijings on the visitors. Baijings is club top scorer and joint-top scorer in the current Frauen-Bundesliga campaign with three goals.

Bayer have registered six points from two wins in three outings whilst Meppen are yet to collect any point.

11th place Werder Bremen host eighth place Duisburg at the Weser-Stadion Platz 11 on Sunday.

The hosts have collected just a point from one draw in three contests whilst the visitors have registered three points from one win in the same number of matches.
